Food Security, Quality Food and Agricultural Development

Food security status in Bangladesh, is not only about food production. Even after producing sufficient volume of food grains, system may fail ensuring its availability at all the places. From farm-to-fork food can be contaminated, adulterated at any stage of production, marketing, preserving and distribution cycle. The country is able to grow over 35 million tons of food grains annually, over three times higher what it used to produce back in 1971 (11 million tons). Unfortunately, our policy planners, and political leadership in charge of ensuring food safety governance, failed us in having access to safe food yet. Number of undernourished people stands at 26.3 million in 2015 compared to 26.5 million in 2010-12. Rise in sea level, extreme weather patterns, frequent flooding and loss of arable land are growing threats to food security. Bangladesh’s agricultural land is shrinking by 1% annually while the population is growing by 1.2%. So, rebuilding the system of production and distribution, offering quality seeds at fair prices, developing better crop varieties and practices, developing climate-smart agricultural technologies, and developing markets using an approach that encourages entrepreneurship and supports the country in becoming self-sufficient in food production can be the strategies to ensure food security.
